MITA Junior Tennis Racket & Ball Guide
Choosing a first or new tennis racket is an important step in a child’s athletic development. The right equipment affects not only the speed of progress but also the young athlete’s health and comfort on court.
The most important factor is the child’s height. A racket that is too long can negatively affect technique and place unnecessary strain on the shoulder and elbow.
When the racket is placed vertically next to the child, the top of the frame should be around ankle height.
The racket should feel light and comfortable. If your child struggles to swing freely or holds the racket with visible tension, it may be too heavy. Excessive weight can lead to discomfort and potential injury.
The handle should fit comfortably in the child’s hand — not too thick and not too thin. An incorrect grip size may cause unnecessary tension in the wrist and forearm.
This is the most common mistake. A racket that is too big can slow down technical development and make learning proper mechanics more difficult.
The best approach is to consult with a coach before purchasing a racket. Proper selection supports healthy development, faster progress, and greater enjoyment of the game.

Racket: 19”–23”
Ball: 25% compression — extremely light and soft (lower bounce, slower speed)
Racket: 25”
Ball: 50% compression — slightly smaller, 50% slower, lower bounce (60-foot courts)
Racket: 26”
Ball: 75% compression — same size as regular, 25% slower
100% compression
Racket size should always be selected based on height and physical readiness — not just age. Ball progression depends on the player’s level, and it is best to receive guidance from your coach.
